›› Eramosa S.S. #10

School Section #10Until the early 1870s it was believed that students attended a district school located on the same farm as the site of the latter S.S .#10, Brucedale. However, no reference was made to it in the 1877 Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, which could have been an oversight on the part of the mapmakers. In 1905 S.S. #10 was formed out of school sections 2, 3, 6, 7, and 9.

In September 1906 a hall at Centre Inn (Fourth Line and Eramosa Gravel Road) was rented, furniture purchased, and a teacher secured. During the summer and autumn of 1907 the red brick school house was completed.

School Section #10Due to a lightning strike early in the morning of June 21, 1934, the school burned to the ground. Undaunted, on July 6 a ratepayer’s meeting was held and the trustees decided to raise money to build and equip a new school.1

Teachers offered courses in agriculture to the rural community, and handed out seed packets from the Department of Agriculture for the children to grow produce to enter in the fall fair.

SS #10 closed in 1965 and the children were bussed to the new Eramosa Public School. The building served municipal purposes for years, but was eventually demolished in 2005.
